Today freelance writer Julie Blackburn interviewed me on making handmade gifts for Christmas – including the handmade soap you’d make in my soapmaking workshops. She’s writing a piece on how you can create your own presents this year and I took her through some of the projects on my blog including a sea glass candle and a diy terrarium. Afterwards I introduced her to the art of handmade soap with a personal lesson.
I recall making my own first batch of soap and so can appreciate how difficult it seems at first. There’s a whole lot of ingredients, a whole lot of instructions, and the battle with getting everything the right temperature can seem overwhelming.
Though I offer a four-part series on my blog for making soap I offer soapmaking lessons because I know it can be hard the very first time and having someone who knows the ropes is incredibly helpful. I’m there in my classes to guide you, to trouble-shoot, to give advice, and to set you on the course to making your own soap at home. In fact, we make two batches of soap in my workshops – the first is to show you the basics and if there was any nervousness to begin with, it’s usually gone by moving on to making the second batch. A little break in the middle for homemade cake and cuppas helps too.
My soapmaking workshops can be booked for individuals but I can take groups of up to six people as well. For groups of two or more I offer discounts which makes the class even more attractive. At £40 per person you walk away with 12 bars of soap and the skills to make even more!
On October 23rd the Isle of Man Newspapers will be printing a Christmas supplement that will feature my soap making classes – keep an eye out for it and for pictures from today. It’s a great time to publish it too because if you’re looking to make some handmade soap for Christmas presents your bars will need at least four weeks to ‘Cure’ before you can use or gift them. So book your class between now and mid November to make sure you have your own handmade soap to give out at the holidays.
