How to build a Mid-Century Modern Wine & Liquor Cabinet

Who doesn’t love feature furniture? A unique table, chair, or cabinet can up a room’s style game instantly. The problem sometimes can be price and that’s one of the reasons I love to DIY. I’ll let you in on a little secret about this video tutorial I was commissioned by the Bob Vila Academy* to create. I’d never made a drinks cabinet before! That’s why I truly believe that anyone, regardless of woodworking skills, will be able to do this. I say in the video that it’s intermediate in level but a determined beginner could do it too.

The idea behind this project was to use inexpensive materials such as plywood, pine, and hardware store fixtures to create a piece that I always wanted to have: A mid-century design inspired Drinks Cabinet! The materials I used are all listed below and can probably be found in a shop in your community. Barring that, online can sometimes save you hassle and expense for some items such as the cabinet legs or wine rack. I also HIGHLY encourage you to upcycle old furniture for this project. The legs are probably the most expensive single part so if you can scavenge legs off another piece it will save you some dosh.

Project Materials (links go to Amazon*)
– Plywood or pine board, 1/2 inch thick and size 96″ x 48″ – lumber yard
– (2) Wood boards, 30″ x 15″ – lumber yard
– 2×2″ battens, a total length of 30′ – lumber yard
– Easy On Sprung Cabinet Hinge)
– Screws (2 1/5″, 1 1/2″, 1 1/4″) – hardware store is best
– (4) Right Angle Stainless Steel Corner Brackets

– (2) thin Disc magnets – sized about 3/4″ in diameter
– (4) Midcentury modern legs – exact legs at Amazon.co.uk
– (4) Angled base plates for legs – exact plates I used at Amazon.co.uk
– Knob or Handle

– Basecoat or primer – you can also use an extra couple of layers of the white semi-gloss
– White semi-gloss paint
– Blue paint – I used a matte finish in Caribbean Blue. This is a similar product.
– Clear finish paint

– Wine rack to fit 24″ x 18″ x 15″ – the one I used is an old one from Ikea but you could make your own or purchase it from another source

This project is relatively inexpensive if you already have the required tools. If you don’t, you’ll need to beg or borrow them off someone you know or invest in your own – If you plan on making more furniture and DIY projects then it’s a solid investment. Below is a list of the equipment you’ll need for this project as well as links to where you can purchase them off of Amazon*.

Equipment & Tools
– Wood glue
– Wood filler – for filling in gaps and covering screw holes
– Jigsaw – your main cutting tool
– Power drill/driver – this is the model I have but screwdriving and drill bits aren’t included so you’ll need to purchase those seperately
– Power sander – my exact model
– Spirit level and Squaring tool – this is what I have and it incorporates both tools in one
– Measuring tape
– a portable work bench – you can move this onto any flat surface to work on.
